Mahesh Majrekar’s film Astitva has created ripples across the country that are yet to die down even as his Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, was released today. It will take a few days to know whether the second film is as big a hit as the first. Unlike other filmmakers who tend to become stereotyped, making the same movies over and over again, Manjrekar takes immense pain to ensure that his films are as different from each other as... well, chalk from cheese, almost. While Astitva is a movie about men abusing their women, JDMGRH is a positive film, a feel-good movie coming out a few days before Diwali. His earlier hit film, Vaastav, was about violence and gore. And he is already preparing for the release of his next film, Kurukshetra, an action film. While Mahesh rejects classification of the typical art and commercial categories, he has actually managed to make art films that are commercial successes. It is the best of both worlds.
