Sema sets up shop in WB

The West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd had entered a deal with the 1.3-billion pound Sema Group to set up a joint venture in West Bengal.

venture, WEBEL, the remaining 15.

The deal with a European firm gains significance since West Bengal, once prime contender for foreign investment, had blotted its copybook with the US with many vacillations. The US had reacted by pitching for neigbouring Orissa.

SGSI has already begun operations with about 20 people situated in Calcutta. By the end of the year, it expects to increase the number to 50 and the turnover to Rs 700,000. Company sources said the Sema had stepped into India due to the easy availability of software personnel.

The Sema Group provides consultancy, systems integration, outsourcing services and software products worldwide. Among its other achievements, it has designed a fully computerised control and command system for a nuclear plant in France and a IT solutions for the European rail networks.

Among its Indian customers are Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd, Birla AT&T, Bharti Cellular and Hutchison Max, Koshica and JT Mobile.
