Software exports hit gross revenues of Rs 58.6 billion in
1997 and the prognosis is good, claims a NASSCOM study.

the National Association of Software and Service Companies, the apex organisation of the Indian software industry.

Gross revenues are likely to cross Rs 64 billion during 1997-98. The study also indicates that exports during 1998 may cross $2.5 billion.

"In spite of the slowdown in exports, software has managed to keep up its growth rate. We feel that after two to three years, exports should grow by even about 100 per cent," NASSCOM Executive Director Dewang Mehta has claimed.

He attributes the growth to the continuing rise in offshore services, the year 2000 conversion projects and the new initiatives taken by NASSCOM for increasing exports to Europe, US, Japan and Australia.

The study indicates that the local software industry is poised to touch revenues of $6.5 billion by 2000, of which exports may be as high as $4 billion.

Mehta said NASSCOM has identified Japan and South Africa as the new targets for the following year. NASSCOM will shortly launch a new initiative dubbed Project Ninjas (NASSCOM's India Japan Alliance for Software) in Tokyo.

"Japan accounts for only about 4 per cent of our software exports and this figure needs to go up," Mehta feels. He claims that to tap Japan, NASSCOM has already launched an initiative to train more Japanese speaking software professionals.
