All phone exchanges in New Delhi to be upgraded

Communications Minister Sushma Swaraj has promised to get all exchanges in New Delhi upgraded to digital electronics systems by the end of the year. She has also vowed to root out corruption from the telecom department.

process to mitigate the sufferings of the subscribers.

Swaraj said that she has discussed the modernisation plan with the officials of the ministry and the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited before setting the deadline.

''Our target will be to achieve this earlier.'' India was not lagging behind in the communication revolution, she claimed.

The minister said ending corruption is another target for her. ''There will be no room for any complaint of corruption. Telephone connections will be given without money changing hands,'' she assured.

S Rajagopalan, chairman and managing director of MTNL, has said it had been planned to decommission 110,000 lines of electro-mechanical exchanges during the year.

The other exchanges to be replaced in a phased manner are Tees Hazari (level-23,251,252), Rajouri Garden (l-53), Shakti Nagar (l-711,712), Chanakyapuri (l-60), Idgah (l-52,73) and Karol Bagh (l-571).

MTNL plans to give out 220,000 new connections this year and for this new exchanges would be operated at Savitri Nagar, Mahipalpur, Ghitorni, Chandiwala Estate, IIT, Kanjhwala, Dwarka, Connaught Place, Bawana, Shalimar Bagh, Mangolpuri, Badli, Narela, Kondli, East of Loni and Zafrabad.

Rajagopalan said the conversion of the '66' exchange to '656', at a cost of Rs 58.2 million, would enable over 6,000 subscribers to enjoy a range of facilities like call waiting, wake-up call, call transfer, abbreviated dialling, hot line and dynamic control STD/ISD facilities besides ISDN connectivity.

The fault liability would also be considerably reduced, he added.

Telecom Commission Chairman and DOT Secretary A V Gokak was also present on the occasion.
