Microsoft sets up Madras office

"We have other plans too for Madras, but I prefer not to discuss them now," he said. Late last year, Microsoft had announced plans to set up a research and development centre outside its Redmond headquarters - possibly in India.

"I don't have any update on that announcement, but political factors have not delayed that decision," he assured. Last year Microsoft spent about $2 billion in R&D.

"Microsoft's Indian revenues are growing faster than our international revenues," he said, but declined to disclose the size of its Indian operations.

Microsoft's international revenues grew by about 30 per cent last year. "This is not only because of the smaller base here but also due to the investments we have made," he said.

"We will be investing in our IT Infrastructure in our country in terms of training our channel, distributors and partners. We are looking forward to building our IT fabric in the country by bringing our best practices here," he said.

"We would also like to send clear messages on the intellectual property rights front," he said.

Microsoft has made some progress here but there is still a long way to go. "We have made considerable progress in the corporate segment over the last two years," he added.
