DoT releases new Internet lines for Mysore, Bangalore

"Right now there are only five industries that are waiting for this connection in Mysore, but once the link starts working, many more will be attracted and we shall expand the capacity accordingly,'' Naidu said.

The experience has been similar in Bangalore when the first link gateway was set up in 1992 at a cost of Rs 27 million, and now with a large number of industries using the facility, investment has gone up to Rs 160 million.

The Earth link is being set up at the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering through its wing, STEP, which will also provide the ground facilities and logistics, Naidu said.

Apart from the international gateway, the VSNL is set to expand the lines for Internets in Mysore from the present 25 to 55, through DoT.

The ratio in Mysore for Internet connections per line is now 1:10 and it is about the same in Bangalore.

Though Mysore is the second largest user of Internet in the state, it has only 563 connections. But the pressure has been increasing.

The additional lines will mean there will be no waiting list for quite some time, according to VSNL sources.

In Bangalore, where there are 13,000 subscribers, the additional lines will mean VSNL will be able to maintain the ratio at a healthy 1:10. The internationally accepted norm is 1:15. The service will be on demand at both Bangalore and Mysore.
