IGNOU students to get Net accounts from SatyamOnlineThe Indira Gandhi National Open University has inaugurated its Virtual Campus Initiative to provide Internet access to the students of the School of Computer and Information Sciences from the next semester onwards.The facility will help students have online interaction with faculty members, peer groups and external experts.
SOCIS Director Professor M M Pant said the university would provide CDs to 70,000 registering students and also provide them with in-built SatyamOnline Internet access so that they can interact with faculty members in virtual classroom like scenario. ''Each CD has been configured in a manner to provide a unique student ID so that they can log on to any of Satyam Infoway's existing 17 points of presence in the country,'' said Pradeep Lakshmanan, Satyam Infoway's vice president, Internet sales. Professor Khan said in the era of globalisation and knowledge based society, it is necessary to keep oneself updated and the medium of distance education could play an important role in the country. ''Faster change has propped up the demand for life-long learning,'' he said. IGNOU has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian army to re-skill its workforce after retirement,'' he said.
