Indian software team heads for Brazilian trade fair

Indian software exporters, during their visit in the third week of this month, will also be looking at software contract outsourcing and development of joint ventures in the Brazilian market, a statement from the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council said today.

The delegation is part of the Focus - Latin American Countries programme of the commerce ministry for enhancing trade with the continent.

As the event attracts participation of over 2,000 companies and one million visitors, business opportunities from Brazil's neighbouring countries like Argentina and Chile will also be explored during the visit, ESC Executive Director R H Naqvi said.

Highlighting the trade significance of the Latin American region, Naqvi said that while global imports of the region are over $250 billion, India's exports have a share of about 0.2 per cent in the import basket of the region.

Looking at the fact that the region accounts for 5 per cent of world trade and is the second fastest growing region in the world, Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde has underscored massive efforts for developing India's trade with this region and the ministry has entrusted the responsibility of ESC for developing trade in the information technology sector.

''ESC has, in specific, targeted the $24.6 billion market of information technology in Brazil,'' said Naqvi of ESC. The Brazilian market last year has posted healthy gain in the entire spectrum, covering computer hardware business growing at 69 per cent ($16.9 billion) software sales at $3.1 billion with a projected growth of 13 per cent and the services sector with a market size of $4.6 billion growing at the rate of 19 per cent.

Another advantage of great significance for development of India's software exports in the Brazilian market is that distance when compared to traditional commodity exports is no barrier since software development work will largely be done offshore in India using telecom links. With the competitive telecom pricing structure now in place in India, Indian software exports are expected to develop major inroads in Brazilian information technology market.

Some of the participating companies in the delegation visit, including Telecommunication Consultants India Limited, Abacus Publishing Systems, DSQ Software Limited, Network Systems and Technologies and Hoechst Marton Roussel Limited.
