Picturetel lands AP's Rs 540 m videoconferencing job

This order, the first and largest of its kind in India, will link the chief minister's office with 25 important locations in Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh Technology Services, or APTS, is a state organisation that undertakes consulting and buying of information technology infrastructure for the Andhra Pradesh government.

APTS and its subsidiaries have now placed an order on Siemens' Private Communication Systems Division, which is one of the three distributors for Picturetel.

The project is expected to be completed in June.

With this setup, the chief minister's office at Hyderabad will be connected to the state collectorate headquarters and 23 district headquarters. Two other locations would be simultaneously linked up in a single statewide videoconferencing network.

Through this application, online and face-to-face communication will accelerate the decision-making process, eliminating travel and providing cost-effective solutions, since it has multi-party conferencing capability, disaster-management situations can be most efficiently and swiftly handled.

Besides video application, the equipment also supports date communication across the network. This means that the computers that are linked to the conferencing equipment will support data communication features such as the transfer and data collaboration.

In India, Picturetel is a leading provider of videoconferencing solution and visual collaboration tools, with a market share of over 80 per cent, a company release claimed.
