The HCL HP lessonThere are lessons to be learnt from the resolution of HCL and Hewlett-Packard to go their separate ways after years of fruitful partnership, say information technology professionals. They are of the opinion that the information technology industry should take a unified stand on maintaining the spirit of co-operation in all its efforts to tap the growing domestic market. The industry, it is felt, could not thank HCL and HP enough for the leading role they played in the infotech sector, and their decision to split would be viewed as a major landmark. This, in a situation where the number of joint ventures is on the rise. Observers, however, say the industry will continue to spend more towards innovative products and services. This will be reflected in increased expenditure on human resources development, research and advertisements. It is also expected that there would be larger investments by major multinationals in promoting their international brands in India. While the more established Indian companies would be more aggressive towards product market, there will be more small and start-up outfits looking for new businesses in niche markets. Suresh Vaswani, CEO, Wipro Acer Limited, said the infotech sector should ensure that joint venture partners operate within a framework of principles that are mutually beneficial. HCL and HP, together presented a classic case where such principles converged, he added. Wipro Acer Limited is a joint venture between the Bangalore-based Wipro Corporation and Acer Computer International of Singapore. The latter is part of the $6 billion Acer Inc. of Taiwan, the world's fourth-largest personal computer manufacturer. Wipro, incidentally, has a strategic partnership with British Telecom. The company, now in the process of setting up a new manufacturing unit in Pondicherry, has introduced the latest model in its commercial desktop PC series in the Calcutta market. The Wipro Acer Power 5400, equipped with advanced management features, has been designed to deliver high levels of performance in a networked environment, Vaswani said. |
