Goa to have own earth stationA memorandum of understanding for setting up of an earth station was signed in Panjim yesterday among the Goa government, the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited and the Electronics Corporation of Goa Limited.The earth station will be ready for operation before the convention of the Software Manufactures Association of the Asia Pacific region, scheduled to be held in March 1998 in Goa. The earth station, besides making available international telecommunications facilities to software and other industries in Goa, will also help facilitate rapid development of the state and become a major centre for electronic hardware and software development. The memorandum was signed by Amitabh Kumar, director (operation), on behalf of VSNL and S R Shet, managing director, on behalf of ECGL in the presence of minister for industries Luizinho Falerio. The MoU envisages to bring to Goa, state-of-art international telecommunication services and lay impetus to the development of software industry, electronics industry and other related activities. The VSNL will establish a node in Goa which will comprise of an earth station to be set up at electronic city, Verna, and associated equipment to provide telecommunication facilities. Such services are presently existing in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Bombay, Culcutta, Madras, Bangalore and Pune. UNI |
