GPS Usha's Indian centre takes offGPS Usha Private Limited, the 50:50 joint venture between GPC Plessey Semiconductors of the UK and Usha of India, with an equity of $1 million has started commercial operation to develop integrated circuits and related software.The Indian centre, which is a 100 per cent export-oriented unit, is in addition to GPS' three design centres in the US and one each in Tokyo, Munich and Paris. GPS, part of the $17-billion General Electric Company plc, focuses on development of IC solutions for the computers, communications and consumer industries. In India, the company expects the market opportunity to expand as more of the company's worldwide customers set up manufacturing units here. Some of the typical GPS customers - American, Japanese and European pager and cell phone manufacturers - are already in the country, said Tom Urwin, GPS' managing director. For 1996-97, GPS reported $350 million sales in Europe, the US and Asia-Pacific. In the current year, the company hopes to export around 5 per cent of its products to Asia and the US. |
