It will look at multimedia application for the Indian market in multiple languages, support Indian culture and art and education and training in visual computing technologies, programming tools and multimedia authoring techniques.

The lab is Intel's third set up by the Intel India technology team as part of its academic programme.

Inaugurating the facility, Ron Whitter, Intel's senior vice-president and general manager, content group, said "India's vast software and entertainment industry has an enormous opportunity to be a leading developer for digital content creation in Asia Pacific."

"This facility, combined with NCST support, gives Indian software developers access to the latest technology," he claimed.

Dr S Ramani, director, NCST, said "The Intel India Technology Centre is unique. Unlike other development centres which merely tap into the existing pool of talent in India, this centre will actually strengthen the technological base of this country. We except this partnership to help us in research activities that contribute to the rapid adoption of new technology in India."
