Mastek reworks strategy

The Bombay-based Mastek Limited has done a complete U-turn in its business approach. Mastek, amongst the few companies to have focused on software products, has now realigned its business along offering customer specific software solutions.

The change in focus has resulted in the company undertaking a corporate restructuring exercise. Mastek has disbanded its marketing set up comprising regional heads. This structure has been replaced with a marketing structure that now consists of four solution groups; manufacturing, distribution and sales, financial services and the government sector. It will, however, continue with its existing group for marketing software products of other companies.

Ashank Desai, chairman and managing director said "We have restructured our operations to focus on software solutions as we find more opportunities and growth in these activities. We will continue to support, upgrade and develop our software products. The thrust is now on software solutions."

Mastek had recently entered into an alliance with a subsidiary of BSES Telecom, to provide information technology solutions for the power industry based on its enterprise resource planning software called Mamis. This move is to differentiate itself from other ERP players like SAP and Baan, by combining its technological expertise with the functional and industry expertise of BSES.

"We are also looking at expanding our alliances to provide comprehensive solution for the power industry through our joint venture with BSES. We are looking at tying up for supply chain management solutions. To augment our new solutions driven approach we are also looking at joining hands with the big consulting companies," Desai said.
