Tata IBM launches PC DOS in Hindi

Tata IBM has launched DOS in Hindi. DOS remains the world's largest selling disk operating system.

This is also the first time that an entire operating system will be available in a local language. Only in this case it also happens to be the official language.

Union Defence Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has formally launched the package in the capital.

The initiative will enable the Hindi-speaking population of 360 million to have access to computers in their own language. Managing Director and CEO of Tata IBM Limited Ravi Marwaha said: "IBM is committed to local language computing and is working closely with third-party developers for comprehensive application software development and hardware vendors for bundling the Hindi PC DOS with the new and existing machines."

Office productivity packages, database management, spreadsheets and customised user packages will be the first to be developed. It supports all internal and external commands, data and messages in Hindi.

The biggest user is likely to be the government sector, educational institutions and small and medium businesses.

The packages have been in the conceptual stage for nearly two years though the actual work on development started in January this year according to Michael H Colleary, director emerging markets (software), IBM Asia Pacific.
