Match Report
This was an outstanding match, possibly the closest and the best of all the five. The Modern XI, batting first, was well placed at 108 for 1 in 25 overs with a well-compiled 50 from Greenidge and an attractive fifty from Richards. Then the two West Indians were dismissed quickly, followed by Lara and Sobers for ducks by Verity. Bevan and Hadlee retrieved the situation but soon Modern XI was tottering at 212 for 9, with nearly 8 overs left. Then followed one of those inexplicable last wicket stands. Warne and Garner, normally a rabbit, added 49 valuable runs and took Modern XI to a very competitive 261.
The Vintage XI started badly losing both openers quickly. After promising starts, Bradman and Pollock fell and the golden oldies were 85 for 4. Then Hammond, having a great tournament, and Walcott added 88 precious runs in quick time before Walcott was foxed by a Warne googly. Miller and Davidson showed brief resistance, but they had too much to do in the last two/three overs. When Hammond was run out for 98, it was all over. The last over saw two more wickets fall for very few runs. In the end, the Modern XI won by 10 runs and took a 2-1 lead to South Africa.
The man of the match was deservedly Garner, whose three wickets included Bradman (and Miller and Davidson when both looked threatening). Also considered was the (virtually) match winning cameo of 28.
