Statistical highlights for the second Test (1st day)
Herschelle Gibbs (155 not out, when on 108) became the 18th South African
and the 209th batsman in Test cricket history to aggregate 2000 runs.
Playing in his 32nd match and 52nd innings, Gibbs now has 2047 runs to his
credit.
The 121 run partnership between Gibbs and Boeta Dippenaar was South
Africa's best for the fourth wicket against India. The pair bettered the
previous best of 94 runs between Andrew Hudson and Daryll Cullinan at Cape
Town in January 1997.
Gibbs' unbeaten 155 not out was the highest ever score made by a South
African batsman against India, bettering Cullinan's unbeaten 153 at Calcutta
in November 1996. For the record, the previous highest score made by a South
African batsman against India at home was the 135 by Hansie Cronje at this
same venue in December 1992.
Gibbs' score is also the highest by a South African opening batsman
against India. Hudson's 146 at Calcutta in November 1996 was the previous
highest score.
Gibbs' score at the end of the first day was the fourth highest made at
this ground. Fellow teammate Lance Klusener's 174 against England in
December 1999 remains the highest.
Javagal Srinath's three wickets has taken his tally to 59 against South
Africa. He now has the maximum wickets than any other bowler in the
India-South Africa Test series. He went past the tally of 57 wickets of
Allan Donald. Incidentally, among pace bowlers only England's SF Barnes (83
wickets) and Brian Statham (69) have more wickets than Srinath against South
Africa.
