Nasscom staff break down, hope against hopeKanchana Suggu in Bombay On Wednesday evening, when Nasscom's Chanakyapuri office spoke to Dewang Mehta on routine matters, like they did whenever he went on outstation trips, everything seemed to be fine. All they knew was that he would be returning soon. But Fate had different ideas and in less than 24 hours their world came crashing down. They were completely unprepared for the turn of events and shocked beyond belief when they heard about the sudden demise of their leader in Sydney. After all, till some time back, Dewang Mehta for them was this passionate, friendly, approachable and an extremely hard-working boss. "I hardly get time for myself. I work all day," he told rediff.com once, resolving to make this year different. He had even begun to think about a second marriage. Today, his colleagues at Nasscom are a shattered lot. They just can't believe this has happened to them. Amidst uncontrollable tears an employee said, "I still have some hope left. We are constantly in touch with Australia." Said another employee, "The situation here is real bad." Barely a month ago, Mehta was seen sharing samosas and dhoklas with his colleagues, exhilarated with Yashwant Sinha's new budget. Looking forward to an exciting IT year, Mehta had said, "Watching Mr Sinha present the budget was like watching Zubin Mehta play a software philharmonic orchestra."
