The taskforce, that will be headed by the chief minister himself, will look into IT initiatives in Maharashtra. "It should be ready within the next 8-10 days. The details are still being worked out," he said at NASSCOM 2001 International IT Conference in Bombay on Wednesday.

Deshmukh also said, "The growth of IT is vital to Maharashtra. As far as information technology is concerned, Maharashtra and Mumbai continue to set the trend." He also plans to set up Internet infrastructure in Maharashtra. He added, " Internet infrastructure will be put in place all over Maharashtra in places like Nasik, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Latur."

The IT taskforce will be set up in coordination with Nasscom's president Dewang Mehta. "We will definitely be taking his advice," Deshmukh said.

As the events of Nasscom 2001 slowly unfold in the days to come, one thing is sure to happen - there will be a lot of promises and ambitions of targets, statistics and achievements.

The event, which brings together industry leaders and visionaries from all over India as well as the world, will have the likes of N R Narayana Murthy of Infosys, Alfred Berkeley of Nasdaq, Arun Netravali of Bell Laboratories, Jason Pontin of Red Herring, Pawan Nigam formerly of Healtheon and K B Chandrasekhar of Exodus, each sharing his own vision on digital India.
