The National Association of Software and Services Companies projects the use of PCs/information devices around 30 million by 2008 as against the present level of 5 million.

While Internet subscribers will increase to 50 million in 2008 from the present level of 1.8 million, there will be a 47 per cent increase annually in the number of Internet users from 5.5 million in December 2000 to 120 million in 2008, projects Nasscom.

Also the number of cable television subscribers, fixed phones and television sets will increase to 70 million, 125 million and 225 million from the present level of 38 million, 28 million and 75 million, respectively.

The survey indicated that more than 81 per cent of stand alone PCs sold during financial year 1999-2000 were driven by the need to access the Internet.

While the capital cities account for 77 per cent of Internet connections, the other cities and towns have approximately 23 per cent connections.

The Nasscom survey also revealed that the age group of 18-24 constituted as much as 50 per cent of the total Internet users. Thirteen per cent of the users fell in the below 18 age group, 27 per cent in the 25-39 age group, 7 per cent in 40-54 and only 3 per cent in above 55 age group.

The percentage of daily Internet users in December 2000 was 48 per cent. Thirty-one per cent of users logged on 2-4 times a week, 10 per cent surfed once a week, 8 per cent fortnightly and only 3 per cent used the Internet once a month.
