Moopanar seeks assurance from Centre to abide by SC ruling in Ayodhya case

Tamil Maanila Congress leader G K Moopanar has urged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre to give a guarantee that it would abide by the Supreme Court verdict in the dispute over the Babri Masjid-Ram Janambhoomi site at Ayodhya.

Writing in his party organ Navasakthi, he said Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's recent plea for sorting out the dispute by talks was not enough. All pending cases over the Ayodhya-Babri issue should be transferred to the apex court and efforts should be made to ensure a verdict within a given time-frame, he added.

He said the peaceful observance of the sixth anniversary of the demolition of the Babri mosque at Ayodhya was a definite pointer to the strengthening of secular forces in Tamil Nadu. The state had a tradition going back to poet Subramania Bharathi, who had advocated unity of all human beings, he pointed out.

He said he was doubly satisfied over the peace which prevailed on December 6 last, especially since doubts had been expressed over the situation in Tamil Nadu in the aftermath of the Coimbatore serial blasts.

Commending the state government for the security arrangements, Moopanar said he was aware that the arrangements had caused hardship to some people. However, this had to be borne in the interests of overall peace and communal harmony, he added.
