The first election in 1967 was won by the Jan Sangh, before H K L Bhagat wrested it for the Congress. In 1977 the Lok Dal won the seat, before Bhagat set right things for his party in 1980. Bhagat managed to win the seat till 1989, and in 1991 the BJP's B L Sharma 'Prem' ousted him from the Lok Sabha. In 1996, Sharma was re-elected on the BJP ticket, defeating the Congress's Deep Chand Bandhu by 152,000 votes. Abruptly, mid-term, he resigned from the seat, citing inner-party differences.
