In 1984 Ratilal Varma contested the election on the Janata Party ticket and lost to the Congress's sitting MP. He returned in 1989 on a BJP ticket, and hit pay dirt, cornering 64.1 % of the vote. In 1991, the battle was between Varma and the man who defeated him in 1984, N K Makwana, but the battle was won by Varma. In 1996, adding colour to the fray was former minister Yogendra Makwana, contesting the polls on the Congress-Tiwari ticket; he won 1.96 % of the vote.
