In 1980 and 1984 C S Deshmukh of the BJP trailed behind the Congress candidate, before getting elected in 1989 with a whopping 57.7 % of the votes. He has since been re-elected in the two elections of 1991 and 1996, although in the last election his vote share came down to 35.94 %.
