In 1957, the losing Congressman was Vitthal N Gadgil. In the next election, the Congress managed to win, but it was another candidate. When V N Gadgil returned here in 1967, he was defeated once again by socialist legend S M Joshi. In 1971 and 1977, Mohan Dharia was the MP from here, the first time as a Congressman and the next as the BLD man. Gadgil finally tasted success in 1980, and remained MP for three consecutive terms. He left the seat in 1991, when the BJP's Anna Joshi won the seat. In 1996, the railway minister in Rao's council of ministers, Suresh Kalmadi won the seat back for the Congress. This time, Kalmadi, who has left the Congress, is contesting as an Independent backed by both the BJP and Sena.
