The Congress first won from this hosiery town in 1952, and the next time was in 1984 when it performed a hat-trick. The DMK did not do all that badly here, considering its poor electoral fortunes elsewhere in the state after the emergence of the MGR phenomenon, and had won the 1980 election. In 1996 its Venugopal D defeated the Congress's Anbarasu by 240,000 votes.
