C K Kuppuswamy went into the 1996 election in the firm knowledge that he had won the seat for the Congress three consecutive times. In that election, however, he had no answer to the DMK's M Ramanathan, who trounced him by 262,000 votes. The DMK has denied Ramanathan the ticket this time.
