Badal Choudhary (CPI-M) won this seat in 1996, winning 50.70 % of the vote and defeating his Congress rival A K Bhattacharya by 81,000 votes. The Tripura Upa Jati Samiti, once a force to reckon with, ended up fourth, winning 3.50 % of the vote. In the second elections in 1957, a young Communist leader contested on the CPI ticket and lost. His name, Dasaratha Deb, who would become chief minister in April 1993. In 1989 and 1991 this constituency was represented by Congress strongman Santosh Mohan Deb.
