Harikeval Prashad, who won the 1989 and 1991 elections from here on a JD ticket, crossed over to the Samata Party in 1996. He was defeated by the SP's Harivansh Sahay by 36,000 votes. Ram Naresh Khushwaha, who won in 1977 on the BLD ticket, was also in the fray, this time as the BSP candidate, and he managed to come third with 102,732 votes. Bhola Pandey, who contested on the Congress-T ticket, came fifth.
