After five consecutive terms, the Congress was finally unseated in 1977 by the BLD. The next time the Congress could reclaim it was in 1984, courtesy Khurshid Alam Khan. The Congress promptly lost the next election, Khurshid Alam Khan's son Salman losing to journalist Santosh Bhartiya contesting on the Janata Dal ticket. Salman Khurshid took back the seat for the Congress in 1991, defeating the Janata Dal's Anwar Mohamed Khan. The line-up for the 1996 election: Khan on the Samajwadi Party ticket; Khurshid, of course, for the Congress; Santosh Bhartiya, on the BSP ticket. The winner was Swami Sachhidanand Sakshi of the BJP, who defeated Khan by 85,000 votes. Salman was a distant third, with 97,261 votes.
