Satyagopal Misra has won this seat for the CPI-M since 1980. In 1996, after a gap of 34 years, the Congress won this seat courtesy Jayanta Bhattacharya, who defeated the CPI-M's Lakshman Chandra Seth by 8,000 votes. The BJP's Saswati Bag won just 2.10 % of the vote, but that materialised into almost 20,000 votes.
