After 1962, when the Congress last won from here, the CPI-M has held on with tenacity. After three terms of Krishna Halder, P C Malik did likewise till 1991. In 1996, Sunil Khan kept the CPI-M flag flying, defeating the Congress's Chittaranjan Pramanik by 182,000 votes.
