Orissa gives land to 305,000Orissa has achieved the target of providing homestead land to more than 305,000 landless people, Chief Minister J B Patnaik has said. Talking to the media yesterday, Patnaik said while 90,911 people were given a plot of land each during the past three years, the rest were provided with the same by January 26 as promised by the government. The total land allotted under the scheme of giving public land to landless people is 7906.8 acres. The beneficiaries were identified in a survey conducted by the government in 1995-96. The chief minister said clearance had been sought from the environment and forests ministry for giving land 'pattas' to about 50,000 people who had been holding homestead land inside forest areas. He exuded confidence that the clearance would be received this year itself. Patnaik said efforts would also be made to give homestead land to people who have been living in urban slums for more than 10 years. They will be given land pattas for the same land or an alternative site under the rehabilitation scheme, he added. UNI
