Four killed in stampede at Mirzapur ghat

A stampede at the congested Pakka Ghat in Mirzapur left four people dead and 11 injured this afternoon.

The stampede followed the simultaneous arrival of the up and down Triveni Express trains at The vindhyachal railway station. A large number of devotees, who arrived on the trains, rushed towards the Pakka Ghat for a dip in the Ganga before paying obeisance at the temple.

District magistrate Rama Raman and superintendent of police B Singh reached the Ghat immediately and rushed the injured to hospital. The DM has ordered a magisterial probe.

Raman said Chief Minister Kalyan Singh had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each to the families of the deceased, Rs 20,000 to the seriously injured, and Rs 5,000 to those with minor injuries.

Of the four dead, three have been identified. They are Shyamu Yadav from Bariyasanpur, (Varanasi), Ajai Gupta from Shivdaspur (Varanasi) and Rameshwar Prasad Pandey from Bhatani (Pratapgarh).

The injured are Jangilal from Karchhana (Allahabad), Hari Pratap Singh from Mughalsarai (Chandauli), Chandrika Prasad Sharma from Karchhana (Allahabad), Ambikeshwar Singh from (Gonda), Amit Chaturvedi of Hanuman Mandir (Gorakhpur), Sunil Kumar Singh from Ganer (Patna), Premchand from Chandmari Bajar (Varanasi), Kamlesh Tewari from Mirzapur, Dhananjai Chauhan, Sanjiv Sachan and Krishna Singh from Allapur (Allahabad).
