NEW YORK

In Black and White: What has Independence meant for women in India? is the theme of a photo exhibition organized by Sakhi for South Asian Women.

Film-maker Mira Nair will be the chief guest at the opening night reception on October 15, 6 pm to 9 pm at Admit One Gallery. The exhibition ends on November 7.

In Black and White is a collection of vivid photographs that explores the notion of Independence for women in India through the works of many acclaimed artists like Sebastiao Salgado, Max Vadukul, Michael Ackerman, Pamela Singh, Jyoti Bhatt, Rajesh Vora, Zana Briski, Sheba Chhachhi, and others.

The images capture key themes related to women's lives such as education, family, health and sexuality, poverty, power, religion, violence, and work. The subjects include women in all walks of life from city slumdwellers to affluent models, village laborers to urban sex workers, fighter pilots to politicians and activists, new brides to abandoned girl children.

The show was conceived and designed by Point of View and is sponsored in part by the Ford Foundation. Point of View, a non-profit organization based in Mumbai, aims to promote the views of women through the creative use of media.

Sakhi for South Asian Women is a non-profit, New York City-based organization that works to end violence against women of South Asian origin through education, advocacy, leadership development, and organizing. Its goal is to help empower survivors of abuse and build a violence-free community.

The national tour of this exhibit is part of Sakhi's tenth anniversary celebrations.

Suggested donation: $ 15. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

At Gallery: Hours between 11 am and 7 pm. It is located at 529 West 20th Street, 4th Floor (between 9th and 10th avenues, near Chelsea Piers) New York, NY, 10011.
