Deshpande says she was misquoted on Ayodhya

Veteran Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande categorically denied on Thursday that she had ever said the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya had been brought down by a bomb explosion on December 6, 1992.

In a television programme, Deshpande said she had been quoted out of context. All she had said was that "it was like any other bullet shot, which had killed Mahatma Gandhi".

She was replying to a question about Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh chief K S Sudershan's statement before the Liberhan Commission on Wednesday that he had based his statement on Deshpande's observation when he had said the structure was brought down by an explosion.

Deshpande admitted she was in Ayodhya on the day when the 16th century shrine was razed. She described the incident as another assassination of the country's ethos and pride after that of Mahatma Gandhi.

Deshpande also denied she had any secrets about the incident and said she would tell the Liberhan Commission everything. She is to appear before the commission on January 30.
