Mamata Banerjee withdraws resignation

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee withdrew her resignation from the Union Cabinet after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee assured her, in a faxed letter, that he will take another look at the recent hike in prices of petroleum products after his knee surgery in Bombay.

The Trinamul Congress chief told reporters in Calcutta, "We cannot have more authentic proof than this letter which says that the prime minister will seriously re-look into the price hike of petroleum products."

The letter of the prime minister states: "I fully share your concerns and sentiments about the affect of the price hike on the common people. Even though the government has tried to minimize the burden of the price increase on the consumers it cannot be disputed that the hike does cause hardships to the common citizens."

"We are closely watching the trend in international oil prices. I assure you the entire issue will be given a re-look and appropriate action will be taken after my knee surgery," the letter stated.

Ajit Panja, who had also resigned along with Mamata, was not present at the press conference as he had left for Puri.
