US may declare LeT a terrorist organisationThe United States is considering declaring Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Tayiba a terrorist organisation, India's Ambassador to the US Naresh Chandra said Monday. "We are convinced there is sufficient evidence to take action against them (LeT). I believe the case is in process and it is being given final touches," he told Zee TV. Asked how soon the action could be taken, he said: "It is difficult to predict how soon action against LeT will be taken by the US government. But it can be anytime." Washington had earlier declared Harkat-ul-Ansar, also based in Pakistan, a terrorist outfit. The terrorist outfit has since changed its name to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. Chandra said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's ongoing visit to the US would open more opportunities in the telecom and information technology sectors in India. "It will impart momentum to the initiatives taken in March (when US President Bill Clinton visited India) and earlier." Quoting Vajpayee's remarks that New Delhi and Washington were natural allies, he said the prime minister would be interacting with a select group of Indian Americans, including those who have excelled in the IT and telecom sector. PTI rediff.com has assigned Associate Editors Amberish K Diwanji and Savera R Someshwar to cover Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to the United States.
