Orissa govt plans another zoo

E-Mail this report to a friend

Bibhuti Mishra in Bhubaneswar

The Orissa government has mooted another zoo in the state, at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to review the forest and environment departments' activities. This will be the second zoo after the much maligned Nandankanan zoo.

Said forest and environment department secretary H S Chahar, "The second zoo has not been proposed to shift animals from Nandankanan. It is to accommodate the variety of wildlife in the state."

Its location is yet to be finalised. However, there is a proposal to set it up in western Orissa or the state's tribal belt, as Nandankanan zoo is near Bhubaneswar. The Central Zoo Authority has to clear the project.

Wildlife activists have expressed surprise over the move, as they alleged that the government is unable to manage even one zoo properly.
