White tiger in escape drama at Nandankanan zoo

Bibhuti Mishra in Bhubaneshwar

A white tiger slipped out of its enclosure on Tuesday, while being taken into a crawl cage, leading to panic among visitors at Nandankanan zoological park.

Jagat, the five-year-old tiger, was being taken for training by the zoo authorities. However, it escaped and took a narrow road besides the enclosure that led to the front gate. It was recaptured when it reached the zoo gate.

The brief escape led to panic at the zoo.

Jagat's mother Durga was a victim of the infamous tiger tragedy at the zoo in July and his father Sukant expired on July 29. Jagat was with his two brothers.

On February 13, a tiger Naveen had slipped out of the enclosure and killed a temple priest, while on September 13, a tiger had almost scaled over the enclosure fence.

Ajay Acharya, the zoo's animal welfare officer, claimed there was nothing unusual about the incident.
