Two held for attack on Rajan

The Bangkok police have arrested two South Asians, believed to be among seven gunmen involved in the attack on gangster Rajendra Nikhalje aka Chhota Rajan on September 15.

The Bangkok Post said the Yan Nawa police arrested the two outside a Bang Rak food shop.

Sher Khan and Mohammad Salim attracted police attention by running away as patrolmen were passing by. One of the suspects carried an address book that listed Rohit D'Souza aka Rohit Verma's telephone number. D'Souza, an Indian businessman, was killed, while his wife Sikandi Hama and Rajan were seriously wounded.

The nationalities of the two arrested was not known, though an Indian television channel claimed they were Pakistanis.

The Bangkok police claimed that one of them confessed he had been sent from India to kill Rajan, identified in immigration records as Vijay Daman.

Rajan is under tight security in the intensive care unit of Samitivej hospital in Bangkok, where his condition is reported to be out of danger.

According to Pol Maj-Gen Pongsak Rohitopakarn, deputy city police chief, the shooting may have been motivated by D'Souza's 'embezzlement' of money from an Islamic group in India.

Pongsak said that the police were seeking information on the fraud from the Indian embassy.

Two 9mm guns, believed to have been used in the attack, and found abandoned near the general post-office in Bang Rak on Monday, have been sent to the scientific crime detection division for examination.

The police said one of the guns was of a make not available in Bangkok.

Pol Maj-Gen Krisda Phankhongchuen, chief of division 5, said a police team from Bombay will arrive next week to help unravel the case.

The Bangkok Police on Tuesday released sketches, of four persons suspected to be involved in the attack, to the media.
