Accused of rape and ostracised,
Orissa farmer ends his life

Imran Khan in Bhubaneswar

A 60-year-old Orissa farmer committed suicide after being ostracised by the village Gram Sabha (local body) for allegedly raping a woman.

"Durga Nayak committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his village in Dhenkanal district," police sources said on Monday.

The Gram Sabha had ordered Nayak not to touch the water of the village and asked him to leave the village without delay.

However, the police has detained the woman, a tribal, and seized the records of the Gram Sabha.

According to an official of the Hindol police station, the woman was allegedly molested by five persons and later raped by Nayak last week.

The alleged victim identified Nayak when the issue was brought up before the Gram Sabha.

However, some people alleged that Nayak was ostracised to save the real perpetrators of the crime.

"Unable to face the grief of being ostracised, Nayak ended his life," a source said.
