Endangered grey pelicans spotted in Orissa

For the first time, rare endangered grey pelicans have been spotted in the world-famous Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary in Orissa. About two dozen pelicans arrived in the sanctuary recently.

The grey pelicans are listed as one of the most endangered birds in the red data book of International Union of Conservation of Nature.

Anup Nayak, divisional forest officer, Rajnagar mangrove division (wildlife) told rediff.com , "We are constantly monitoring the movement of these birds."

Officials said the sanctuary provides a congenial atmosphere for rare birds to breed. The variation of tidal amplitudes ensures ample fish supply for the winged visitors.

Thousands of migratory birds of various species throng the sanctuary every year.
