Accusing Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf of not being sincere enough in the desire for peace with India, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said the general had come to Agra with a one-point agenda: to get India to accept his stand on Jammu & Kashmir.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of India's 55th Independence Day, Vajpayee said he could never accept General Musharraf's claim that the militancy in Jammu & Kashmir was a jihad for freedom.
Criticising the increase in terrorist attacks after the Agra summit, Vajpayee asked what kind of jihad it was that targeted innocent civilians. "What kind of freedom struggle is this?" he demanded to know.
He squarely accused Pakistan of trying to grab Kashmir through the so-called jihad after having failed to do so in two wars.
