People come forward to adopt orphans

"However, not a single orphan child from the quake-affected areas has been brought to any of the orphanages here," Aruna Dave, deputy director in the state government's social defence department said.

Three teams set up by the state government to look for such children have been touring various affected areas, Dave said.

Forty-year-old Popatlal Shah is making rounds of all the city's orphanages in an effort to adopt a child. But his efforts are in vain.

Shah, who already has two children, by adopting an orphan wants to reach out to those facing the wrath of mother nature.

Jayashri Dudhela of Mahipatram Rupram Ashram had a tough time convincing Shah that no child, who has lost his parents, has been brought to the institution.

Displaying a local newspaper, which carried a report that parentless children are being sheltered in orphanages, he insisted on adopting one despite being clearly told by Dudhela that it was not the case.

"We are inundated with phone calls and personal queries by people who want to adopt such a child," says Vijay Pandit, superintendent of the Ashram.

Pandit, who has toured the quake-affected areas of Bhachau, Anjaar and Gandhidham to identify such children, says "At least right now, relatives and neighbour of such children are taking care of them."

Sister Meena of Missionaries of Charity said no orphan child has been admitted to their organisation. "But our teams are moving all over the quake-affected region."
