J&K lends a helping hand

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has joined other states in providing relief to victims of last week's devastating earthquake.

Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah announced a relief of Rs 10 million for victims, while the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) is rushing 100 pints of blood for the injured.

While expressing sympathy with the people of Gujarat, the JKLF after a meeting attended by top front leaders, the organisation said, "We would have sent relief items as well, but our party was not in a position because the decade-old struggle has left 80,000 dead and thousands others comprising orphans, widows, aged parents."

The JKLF will organise a blood donation camp here to collect the blood for the earthquake victims.

The state government, after consulting Gujarat officials, decided to rush 30,000 blankets to Ahmedabad for the homeless.

Efforts are being made to rush the blankets by air from Delhi.

The chief minister and his ministerial colleagues will donate a month's salary towards the relief. State government employees will donate a day's salary.

The chief minister appealed to the people in Jammu and Kashmir to donate generously to the chief minister's relief fund.

People have been requested to donate clothes, especially woollens for victims left with nothing and those who need immediate help.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) expressed grief over the Gujarat tragedy but said, "We are slaves and as such may not be able to extend any kind of help to the distressed people of Gujarat."
