The high-level probe in the gruesome June 1 palace massacre entered the third and final day on Sunday. The panel is likely to seek an extension in view of the "nature and volume of investigations involved," sources close to the committee said.
The panel, appointed by King Gyanendra in the wake of widespread protests over the killing of King Birendra and other royals, began its work on Friday and was asked to submit its report within three days.
During two days of investigation, the committee visited the shooting site at the Narayanahity palace, the Birendra military hospital, where the survivors are being treated, besides talking to royals including Queen Mother Komal Rajya Lakshmi Devi and other eyewitnesses.
The committee includes Chief Justice Keshab Prasad Upadhayaya and Speaker of the lower house Taranath Ranabhat.
"The panel has been working up to 18 hours a day and would endeavour to submit its report within the stipulated time, or else seek extension for another one or two days," the sources said.
The committee's work was delayed after one of its original members, leader of the Opposition Madhav Nepal resigned, citing constitutional procedures.
