India for intensified efforts to curb terrorism

India on Thursday emphasised the need for more focus to be given on intensified joint efforts to effectively deal with the scourge of terrorism during next month's Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Brisbane, Australia.

This was conveyed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during a meeting with visiting Commonwealth Secretary General Don Mckinnon, who is in New Delhi for pre-CHOGM consultations.

During the 30-minute meeting, the terrorist strikes in the United States and its fallout figured prominently. It was felt that Commonwealth countries could do a lot to promote awareness in firmly combating the menace of terrorism.

Mckinnon briefed the prime minister on the substantive preparations for the Brisbane meeting from October six to nine, the theme for which is 'Commonwealth into the 21st Century'.
