The Pakistan cabinet on Wednesday backed President Pervez Musharraf's plan to hold a referendum that would pave the way for extending his term in office for five years.
A joint session of the cabinet and the National Security Council unanimously approved a proposal to hold the referendum on important national issues, an official statement said.
Musharraf would address the nation on Friday to take the people into confidence on the details of the referendum, including the dates, it said.
The meeting was presided over by Musharraf and attended, among others, by the services chiefs, vice chief of staff and provincial governors.
According to officials, the referendum was expected to be held in the first week of next month.
