He called upon both India and Pakistan to shun their differences and asked New Delhi to separate the Kashmir problem from other issues.
He flayed the J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah for encouraging his son Omar Abdullah to continue in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government, despite the Centre rejecting the proposal for greater autonomy to the state.
Lone inherited the leadership and legacy of the party, after his father Abdul Gani Lone's assassination on May 21, 2002.
